Well, my typical answer is to put out. You will be popular with a subset of the population, known otherwise as heterosexual males (and homosexual females, for that matter). But, I think you want something more sustantive than opening your legs.
Being popular has its basis in being confident. It's not so much that you have the latest clothes or listen to the latest music. It's that you feel the clothes and the music make you feel like you are on top of the world. People will congregate around you if they know you're not looking to avoid embarassment, especially people who afraid to face embarassment themselves. That's why in any clique, you'll have an alpha, or a leader, and a number of followers who will adjust to the alpha's tastes once they know if these tastes are successfull. Basically, to be popular, you just can't fear embarassment.
