Interesting. I never really thought about it, since I haven't purchased a Happy Meal in nearly two decades. The best I can think of is that he's never really a happy guy, which is exactly what you want to tell kids - "buy our food, if you look like a unhappy purple blob." Then, doesn't get happy when he's around Ronald McDonald? I think Grimmace is just a subliminal message to all the fat purple kids out there that McDonalds food will make them happy.
